Reclamation of Władysławowo excavation in the Bay of Puck
05.06.2012

May 28th – June 5th the reclamation of Władysłowo excavation was carried out on the Bay of Puck. The works were accomplished with the use of the specialized vessel Proteus, and they were supervised by the Sea Institute in Gdańsk and professor Ryszard Wiśniewski from the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

Five excavations in the Bay of Puck were formed as a result of the extraction of sand for the strengthening of the Hel Peninsula in years 1989-1997. Due to their significant depth (7-13 m) compared with the bottom of the Bay (1,5 – 2,0 m) the bottom of excavations was degraded – withdrawal of the plants growing on the bottom, accumulation of organic matter in the excavation, its anaerobic decomposition and release of mineral phosphorus as well as deoxidation of water in the excavation and its hydrogen sulfide saturation, which made the environment toxic for most of sea organisms. Excavation Władysławowo was among the most degraded excavations.

Reclamation works were carried out according to the „Program on reclamation of excavations in the Bay of Puck” and they consisted in consolidation of the sediments with the use of specially selected chemical substances dozed directly to bottom sediments. After the works were accomplished the sediment stabilization effect was confirmed by analyses carried out by the Staff of Sea Institute. Next the excavation was filled with sand in order to reduce its depth approximately to the level of the Bay of Puck’s bottom which surrounds it.
